My Dog Seems Fine Until I Get Home. Do I Really Need a Dog Walker?

"Honestly, my dog seems fine. They just sleep until I get home."

And I understand why you feel that way.

As dog parents, we do everything we can to give our dogs a wonderful life. We work hard, provide a safe home, buy the best food, and spend our evenings and weekends loving on them. The last thing we want to believe is that we're somehow falling short.

The truth is, your dog probably is fine.

But what if they could be more than fine?

I Ask Myself This Same Question About My Own Dogs

One of the many reasons my daughter at the age of 12 decided to tap into her passion for animals and started this business as a dog walking business. She seen the need for pet parents to not worry when they worked long hours, had family events that would run long, or those pups who had that extra energy they needed to burn off.

Even now, after years of working professionally with pets, I still think about my own dogs when I'm away from home.

Are they bored?

Do they need to go outside?

Are they feeling lonely?

Have they just been staring out the window waiting for me to come back? I have a pup who has aged and is now 11 years old. It's a huge relief knowing someone has come to see my boys it provides that peace of mind.

As pet parents, we carry a tremendous amount of responsibility because our dogs depend on us for everything. And sometimes that responsibility comes with a little bit of guilt.

Not because we're doing anything wrong.

But because we love them so much.

"My Dog Sleeps All Day"

Here's something that may surprise you:

Many dogs do sleep during the day.

But often, they're sleeping because there's simply nothing else to do.

Imagine spending eight or nine hours in the same room every day with no exercise, no social interaction, and no change in environment. Eventually, you'd probably nap too.

Dogs are incredibly adaptable. They learn to adjust to our schedules because they love us and trust us.

But that doesn't necessarily mean it's what helps them thrive.

What Happens When Dogs Don't Get Midday Enrichment?

Every dog is different, but when dogs go long stretches without activity or engagement, we often see:

• Excess energy in the evenings

• Pulling on walks

• Barking or reactivity

• Destructive chewing

• Difficulty settling down

• Increased anxiety

Sometimes these behaviors aren't training problems at all.

Sometimes they're simply a dog saying:

"I need a little more help getting through my day."

Dog Walking Isn't About Replacing You

This is the part I think many pet parents struggle with.

Hiring a dog walker doesn't mean you're too busy for your dog.

It doesn't mean you're failing your dog.

And it certainly doesn't mean your dog loves you any less.

In fact, I believe the opposite is true.

Choosing additional support for your dog means you're paying attention to their needs and making thoughtful decisions about their quality of life.

A professional dog walker isn't replacing you.

We're simply helping bridge the gap until you get home.

What Changes When Dogs Have a Midday Routine?

One of the most rewarding parts of what we do is watching dogs transform once they have a consistent routine.

We often see dogs become:

• More relaxed in the evenings

• Better behaved on walks

• More confident

• Less anxious

• Happier and more settled overall

And perhaps the biggest transformation happens for the pet parent.

Because instead of rushing home feeling guilty or wondering how your dog's day went, you know.

You know they were cared for.

You know they had interaction.

You know someone who understands and loves dogs checked on them.

And that peace of mind is invaluable.

So, Do You Need a Dog Walker?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

The better question might be:

If your dog could tell you what would make their day better, what do you think they would ask for?

For some dogs, that's more play.

For others, it's a bathroom break, a walk, a chance to sniff, or simply some companionship in the middle of a long day.
